Why not go? We could stop at chocolate as being a good enough reason to go to Switzerland but, that would not be fair to the traditional cheese fondues you will find all over this country and especially so in the Alps where it originates. So if cheese and chocolate are not your thing, what about the stunning scenery in every direction?
Cosmopolitan and quaint all at the same time, Switzerland is a wonderful place to escape to and just relax. For adventure junkies, the Alps are your playground. Something for everyone, whether it be a bit of shopping, enjoying nature, sailing or even just walking around the different towns, you will be refreshed by the absence of crazy political conversations in this idyllic neutral zone. While you could easily just stay in Switzerland, many cities are a popular destination on many river cruises through Europe if you would like to see more of this enchanting country.
Zermatt – The most visited peak in Switzerland is Matterhorn. At 14,692 feet high, this is the 12th highest in Western Europe, but likely the most popular of the mountains. Stunningly beautiful, it is an equally dangerous mountain to climb if you a planning to do that. There is talk of a cable car going up there, and Switzerland is scaling back the number of climbers from about 3,000 annually to reduce the traffic from those daring souls who attempt it. None the less, the mountain can be enjoyed with a view from a swanky mountain resort any time of the year or trekking the surroundings.
Lake Geneva - The lake can be enjoyed from a number of places, including France where they refer to it as Lac Léman. Take a camera with you as the views are incredible from Mont Salève in Archamps, which can be easily reached from Geneva.
While Geneva and Montreux are the two most popular places on the lake, Lausanne is definitely worth a visit. It is a lovely city with excellent culinary options to delight any foodie. You can also see a 12th-century Gothic church, and for who love hiking, you can go all the way to Geneva in about 13 hours. There are shorter trails like the Alpine Panorama, taking about 3 hours through jaw-dropping landscapes.
