The Arctic Circle
The Arctic Circle covers about 4% of the earth's surface and includes portions of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, Russia, Canada and the United States. Some include Iceland in the region, but it really lies just below the circle. In all, only around four million people live in this region, including indigenous peoples. Many people don't realize the Arctic Circle actually moves north about 49 feet per year due to the Earth’s axial tilt, and in more than 50 million years or so, North America and Asia will meet again to form the Amasian continent—fascinating stuff! Another interesting fact is that the magnetic North Pole moves about 34 miles per year toward Russia, and in the last 40 years that has accelerated significantly.
A visit to the everchanging Arctic is always an adventure and you never know what surprises you'll find in your explorations here! You will, however, always find quaint villages, diverse landscapes and wildlife seen nowhere else. Since the Arctic traverses so many countries, the unofficial capital is Longyearbyen, a small coal-mining town on Spitsbergen Island, in Norway's Svalbard archipelago.
In recent years, tourism to the Arctic has experienced tremendous growth so getting there sooner than later is a great idea. Go on an amazing expedition cruise or fly in and immerse yourself into the many fascinating olaces within the Arctic Circle.
